DIY Water Damage
There are plenty of things that can cause water damage in your home. This could be anything from a leaky pipe, to an overflowing bathtub, to a full blown flood. With all of these possibilities for water damage around the home, you should probably know how to handle the situation just in case water damage happens to occur in your home. Here are some things you can do in a not-so-bad case of water damage. When dealing with major water damage, please make sure you contact your local water restoration company as soon as possible!
The first thing you want to do when associating with water and electricity is to turn off the power! If it’s something like a leaky pipe, obviously you do not need to turn the power off, you are probably not risking electrocution in this situation. But, anything worse than that, and it should be shut off. Next, you should start removing any furniture, important papers, and other valuables as soon as possible. Some things will not be able to recover, so grab what you can as quickly as you can. Water must be extracted from the room as well. Sitting water can cause leaking through cracks in your floors and can not only spread the water damage, but it could lead to mold if not taken care of promptly. Water can be extracted, depending on the size of damage, through towels, mops, or wet vacs.
After all the water is extracted, you can proceed to the drying process. Drying can be completed with fans, dehumidifiers, and good ol’ ventilation! Ventilation is key in this process. Opening doors, windows, even cabinets, will all help in airing the place out. Make sure you throw out any carpet that has been sitting in water for more than 48 hours. It places a high risk for mold damage. After the drying process is complete, you should then go on to ensure that there was no mold growth by using anti-mold treatments.
After all is said and done, if you are still feeling nervous about the situation, you can call in your local water restoration team for a free estimate. They will have professionals come out and inspect the home for any water damage/mold damage that may have occurred.

The team that was sent to our house was wonderful. Their experience and professionalism in our situation was outstanding. I was concerned about our children and they took every precaution (air purifier, microbial spray) to keep them safe. Not only did they have good work ethics, they were personable and caring as well.Angela and Scott S.
