Fluctuating Temps Cause Water Damage

As winter continues to pound the Midwest and Northeastern United States, it’s important to remember that the influx of temperatures can affect your home and the infrastructure of its plumbing system. The result of these constant weather changes is water damage to your home. This damage can’t always be avoided, but knowing how it occurs can help you identify it before it becomes a bigger issue.

One form of water damage that occurs due to the rise and fall of temperatures in winter months is the ice dam. How do you know if you have an ice dam? Icicles. Icicles create when snow on your roof melts and refreezes over and over. This is often due to poor attic insulation, but it also happens when temperatures shift quickly above freezing to below freezing – especially during the day when the sun is out. Icicles and ice dams can cause damage to your roof, gutter, and the interior of your home if the ice gets under roof shingles or siding and melts. This is a very common water damage occurrence this time of year.

Frozen pipes are another common result due to the frequent temperature changes. When pipes freeze, they have the potential to burst – which can be very messy and very costly to cleanup and fix. Pipe insulation is one way to avoid freezing pipes. Pipe insulation is relatively cheap, too. Wrap any visible pipes in pipe insulation and always keep your home above 68*F when the weather is extremely cold. Open cupboards to allow air to circulate around pipes, too.

While these are the most common causes of water damage this time of year, there are many more. The team that was sent to our house was wonderful. Their experience and professionalism in our situation was outstanding. I was concerned about our children and they took every precaution (air purifier, microbial spray) to keep them safe. Not only did they have good work ethics, they were personable and caring as well.
