Keeping Gutters Clean To Avoid Water Damage

Spring has sprung! Almost, anyway, depending on your location. Spring brings melting snow and rain – and more water damage than we see in any other season. A major reason we see water damage this season time and time again is due to gutters that are not properly working. Gutters are used to carry water from the roof to the yard so water doesn’t run straight off the house and accumulate near the home. Water that accumulates right next to the house is going to find its way into your basement or foundation and cause massive amounts of damage.

When weather permits, make sure gutters are cleaned out properly. All gutters should be completely clear so water can flow freely to the downspouts. Gutters clogged with dirt, leaves, twigs, etc., will not be effective. If you see puddles close to the home, you may have discovered where your gutter is clogged and overflowing.

Downspouts should also be clear- and they should extend a good distance from your home. Water should move a good 3-5 feet away from your home when it exits the downspout. If water doesn’t move far enough away from your home, it’ll collect near your foundation and cause major problems down the road – especially with snow melting and spring rains.

Make sure gutters aren’t damaged. Gutters that are bent or banged up can’t properly carry water to where it needs to go. Again, water needs to flow freely to the downspout – which should also be undamaged in order to work effectively.

By just making sure your gutters are in working order, you can avoid flooding to your basement, damage to your foundation, or even flooding to upper levels of your house. Gutters that aren’t properly connected could allow water into your attic or upper floors if water gets into the siding.

The team that was sent to our house was wonderful. Their experience and professionalism in our situation was outstanding. I was concerned about our children and they took every precaution (air purifier, microbial spray) to keep them safe. Not only did they have good work ethics, they were personable and caring as well.
