Replacing Water Damaged Household Items
If your home is affected by water damage or flooding, you may question what to keep and what to pitch. It should be noted right away that if the water damage or flooding is due to sewage water (waste water), contact a water restoration company to help you. This type of water is dangerous and most items should be either professionally cleaned or thrown out. In regard to any other types of water, consider the item and what it would take to bring it back to its pre-loss condition. Things like personal items and clothing may just need to be washed or wiped down. Pictures can be restored professionally. What about household items?
Building materials such as ceiling tiles should be pitched if they were completely saturated with water. They are relatively cheap to replace and don’t handle water saturation well. If the water damage is minor, they can be dried and reused.
Drywall can also be dried if not overly saturated. It must be dried completely, though, to avoid mold growth. High powered fans and dehumidifiers must be used to make sure dry wall is dried properly.
Air ducts that are affected by flooding should at very least be cleaned if they are made of metal. Flexible duct materials should be replaced. Ducts move air all around the home so you don’t want to risk mold growth here.
If water reaches insulation, it should be replaced. Insulation is a breeding ground for mold. It’s also cheap to replace. Drying it off would require a lot of time and effort and no real security that mold growth hasn’t already begun.
Carpeting is a tricky one. Cleaning and drying carpet affected by water damage can be difficult, and carpet – and its padding – can be a great home for mold. You can attempt water extraction and cleanup with a steam cleaner, but if it’s a big job you may want to call in the pros. Also, if the water damage is due to floodwaters from outdoors, leave this to the pros. This water can also be contaminated.
These are just a few examples of household items that you may want to consider pitching or keeping. There are many more. If you have any questions in regard to water damage contents, contact a water restoration company. We are here 24/7 for all water damage services.

The team that was sent to our house was wonderful. Their experience and professionalism in our situation was outstanding. I was concerned about our children and they took every precaution (air purifier, microbial spray) to keep them safe. Not only did they have good work ethics, they were personable and caring as well.Angela and Scott S.
