Water Damage Categories
Water damage caused by flooding comes in many shapes and forms. Heavy rains, sewer backup, broken pipes, hurricanes, damaged roofs – all of these can cause severe water damage to your home.
There is more than one type of floodwater, too. Floodwaters are categorized into three different areas. They are:
Category 1: This is known as “clean water”. This includes rain, broken water heater, drinking water, water from a leaky ice maker or clean water entering a washing machine, or water from a broken air conditioner. This water is relatively harmless to humans. It is usually easiest to clean up.
Category 2: This category is known as “grey water”. Grey waters come from sources such as dirty water from a washing machine, dishwasher, or water beds. This water does pose a risk to human health as it contains bacteria, mold, and/or chemicals. Grey water is a little more difficult to clean because it requires the water damage technician to wear protective gear. This type of water is often a source for mold.
Category 3: Known as “black water”, this is the worst type of floodwater you can encounter. Black water flooding comes from sewer backups, toilet bowls containing human waste, floodwaters that come in from the outdoors. Black water contains hazardous toxins that can be extremely dangerous to your health. Because of this, black water is considered the most difficult to clean up. Water restoration specialists must wear head to toe gear and make sure every area is either cleaned of disposed of.
Regardless of your water damage restoration category, it is important to contact a water restoration specialist to help assess and restore your home to its pre-loss condition.

The team that was sent to our house was wonderful. Their experience and professionalism in our situation was outstanding. I was concerned about our children and they took every precaution (air purifier, microbial spray) to keep them safe. Not only did they have good work ethics, they were personable and caring as well.Angela and Scott S.
