Water Damage Risks

Water damage in the home can range from a tiny leak in the faucet of your sink to a flooded home. While all water damage is not good for the home, the worst is sewage. This is referred to as black water. The categories range from 1, being the cleanest, all the way to 3, which is the worst of all and is horrendously unsanitary. Black water, sewage, and toilet backflow all fall under this category. If at any point you are presented with this type of water damage, make sure you stay away and call your local water restoration company as soon as possible.

Sewer water, or any category 3 water, is vastly contaminated. Contaminants may include parasites, bugs, feces, fungi, and other harmful components. Because of all the harmful contaminants, there is a risk to your health when you around/in this type of water. If you are ever in the home or business when sewage is displayed, you must leave immediately. If the spill happens in your home, try to find other living arrangements until the mess has been taken care of.

Professionals should be called every time in a situation like this. Not only will they have the experience dealing with this type of water, but they will have all the right protective gear. This could include gloves, eye gear, or even full body suits. It all depends on how bad the damage is.

On to the possessions. Professionals will try to salvage as much as they can, but it’s unlikely they will be able to save the highly exposed porous materials. This can include, but is not limited to, paper, bedding, padding, and upholstery. These materials should be disposed of to save yourself from risk. If you have insurance, make sure to photograph anything that has been contaminated. Anything that has touched the sewage should be labeled as contaminated.

As you can see, there isn’t much you are going to be able to do single-handedly here. Professionals are the way to go. Experience, correct gear, and correct tools are all going to make for a better, faster, and SAFER cleanup. We invite you to choose us for all of your restoration needs. The team that was sent to our house was wonderful. Their experience and professionalism in our situation was outstanding. I was concerned about our children and they took every precaution (air purifier, microbial spray) to keep them safe. Not only did they have good work ethics, they were personable and caring as well.
